Social Media updates you need to know: February 2022

Here are some of the latest social media news that entrepreneurs and small businesses need to know.

Twitter:

According to Social Media Today, Twitter is testing a new long-form content option  called “Articles.”  It appears that this new option will allow you to create blog posts within the app. One reason that I have not focused on Twitter for my brand is because the average lifespan of a tweet is about 18 minutes. This means your Twitter content doesn’t stick around long and you need to be consistently active on the platform in order to grow your audience. It will be interesting to see if this new type of content will have a longer shelf life. For those with large Twitter following, this may be a great way to distribute your long-from content from your newsletter or website.

Instagram:

Instagram just added new features for Safer Internet Day including a new and improved content manager. “Their new ‘Your Activity’ center provides a full overview of your IG activity, including time spent in the app, interactions with others, searches that you’ve conducted, and the content that you’ve uploaded over time. Additionally, the new Security Checkup’ allows people to secure their account including checking login activity, reviewing profile information, confirming the accounts that share login information and updating account recovery contact information such as a phone number or email address.”

LinkedIn:

As a response to the political disinformation that was distributed on social media in 2016 and 2020, LinkedIn is now testing an option to turn off political content on your feed. The new option, which is now available to some US users, utilizes keywords and signals from users, as well as input from LinkedIn’s editorial team, to identify political posts, and eliminate them from your feed. Users will also soon be able to block posts on certain topics from appearing in their stream.” While I am glad to see action being taken to prevent the spread of disinformation, I hope that the algorithm doesn’t prevent legitimate conversation about equity and social justice issues.

YouTube:

If YouTube is a big part of your social media strategy, you need to make sure you are doing live streams. “Daily live-stream watch time more than tripled between January 2020 and December 2021 and YouTube is looking capitalize on this with new elements like collaborative live-streaming and live-stream shopping.” Additionally, you also need to consider how to leverage YouTube’s shorts. With the popularity of TikTok continuing to grow, YouTube is seeking to capitalize on the popularity of short form video and is introducing new capabilities including new video effects, editing tools, and more.

I’d love to hear from you. Which of these will you be using in your social media marketing? Drop me a comment below and tell me!
